How do I know I'm ovulating?

1. Change in Cervical Mucus

  • Sign: During ovulation, cervical mucus becomes clearer, stretchier, and more slippery, similar to egg whites.

2. Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

  • Sign: Slight increase in BBT (about 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit) after ovulation. Tracking BBT daily can help identify this pattern.

3. Ovulation Pain (Mittelschmerz)

  • Sign: Some women experience a sharp or cramp-like pain on one side of the lower abdomen, usually around the middle of their menstrual cycle.

4. Increased Libido

  • Sign: A noticeable increase in sexual desire around the time of ovulation.

5. Changes in Cervical Position

  • Sign: During ovulation, the cervix may become higher, softer, and more open. This can be checked through self-examination.

6. Breast Tenderness

  • Sign: Hormonal changes during ovulation can cause breast tenderness or sensitivity.

7. Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

  • Method: These over-the-counter kits detect the surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) that occurs 24-48 hours before ovulation.

8. Saliva Ferning Test

  • Method: A microscope test to observe a ferning pattern in dried saliva, which indicates high estrogen levels typical of ovulation.

9. Increased Sense of Smell

  • Sign: Some women report a heightened sense of smell around ovulation.

10. Tracking Menstrual Cycle

  • Method: Keeping a record of your menstrual cycle can help predict ovulation, which typically occurs about 14 days before your next period.
